What makes a good book?

It's all relative, right?  But here's someone who helps prove the point that was the subject of one of my previous posts What's a Culture Snob to Do?

Sara Nelson, until recently the editor in chief of Publishers Weekly, chose a list of summer reads for the June 2009 issue of Real Simple magazine.  Her criteria?

1. A strong voice.
2. An extraordinary insight: about history, a culture, or a character.
3. A perfect length--either short enough to knock off in a few afternoons or long enough to last your whole vacation.

And drum roll please . . .

4. A cover that makes you look smart or interesting while reading it in public!

It's coming up veggies!!!

Look what our garden is finally doing!  GROWING!!! 

It took us five years to get a beautiful garden in, and despite our earlier setbacks with the soil, it's happening!  JJ and I went outside last night before bedtime to check it all out!

Today is the 45th anniversary of the film Mary Poppins.  I watched it a few months ago with my kids.  They liked it!  Nothing too scary in it!   And I, personally, am a total Julie Andrews fan.  My favorite movie of all times is still The Sound of Music!  What's yours?

Brothers, take note!

After reading this, I think my two brothers ought to thank me!  Maybe there was one MORE reason why I waited so long to get married and have those babies!  Could it have been for my brothers???  Hmmmmm . . .

According to a new report from the University of Utah, women who have babies naturally in their 40s and 50s tend to live longer than other women.  (Woo hoo!  Finally something GOOD about having babies later in life!!!)

Here's the "brotherly" part . . . Not only do these women (like me!) live longer, but so do their BROTHERS!  The sisters-in-laws, though, don't seem affected, suggesting that it's the genes that prolong the lifespans, rather than social factors. 

I'll be waiting for my brothers' thanks!

Yummy lunch idea!

Some of you know that I have been working on an article about MOMS' lunches, not KID lunches!  There are enough recipes out there for "picky eaters" and kids in general!  I want something for me!

I came across this sandwich in the August 2009 issue of O magazine.  The picture alone makes me delirious!  The spread is made with white beans and then there is the lettuce, tomato, onion, avocado, chicken breast, bacon and sprouts!  While I may not attempt this entire thing, I think any part of that combo sounds great, and with a little imagination, this could become a fabulous lunch for ME!
